Fall has arrived!
And Fall in the Hudson Valley is a spectacular place to visit. If you hurry, you can still get to Kingston for the O+ Festival (Oct. 5-7, 2018), a unique festival of art, music and wellness. The three-day multi-venue festival originally launched in Kingston in 2010, has now evolved into a huge community of public artworks and loads of music. During the annual event, all participating artists and musicians exchange their contributions to the festival programming for free and receive discounted health and wellness services from a volunteer-staffed "pop-up clinic”. This year's festival (the ninth O+ Festival) themed “Shadow”, focuses on locally based artists. Interactive and participatory projects include murals, light and shadow projections and site-specific installations throughout the city. What could be better? Listen to great music. Enjoy a self-guided tour of the O+ murals and enjoy the creative large scale art painted on buildings around Kingston.
On Sunday Oct. 7, the Kingston waterfront celebrates Columbus Day with the 11th Italian American Festival starting at 11:00 AM and ending at 7:00 PM. Every year we go and eat our fill of favorite Italian specialties; pizza of course, sausage and pepper subs, pasta of any type, pasta e fagioli (soup), meatballs, rice balls, zeppoles (those yummy morsels of fried dough dusted with powdered sugar) and cannoli. To
wash down the food, there’s wine, beer, Pellogrino water and plentiful bars and drinks at the restaurants along the Strand. It’s not all food and drink. There’s Italian specialty foods, gifts and traditional products, And throughout the day, the folks will be foot-tapping to Italian standards, opera, and lively cover bands.
And a couple of days later, one of the country’s best independent film events, the
2018 Woodstock Film Festival will take place in Woodstock, Rhinebeck, Rosendale,
Saugerties and Kingston, NY. This year’s festival (Oct. 10-14, 2018) offers screenings,
(features, documentaries, shorts, various animation shorts, video shorts and teen films) as well as panel discussions, live music performances, and art-related activities. This year’s Maverick Award will be given to Julie Taymor (Tony, Emmy and Grammy-winning and Oscar-nominated filmmaker) and the Filmmaker Award of Distinction will be given to Matthew Heineman (Academy Award-nominated and Emmy Award winner). Make plans now, and book dinner at one of the new restaurants that have recently opened in Uptown Kingston, then walk over to Backstage Productions on Wall Street for the Maverick Awards
ceremony Saturday Oct 13. Dress up, wear a tux or a gown: who knows, you might meet a celebrity!
